I know it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but I hate when a scene is described as having a guy in "tighty whities" and then when I see the scene he is in boxer briefs, or colored briefs, or any kind of underwear that isn't white briefs. The nadir of this was when I finally sat through my first (and last) episode of Glee because one of the characters was complaining he had to be in "tighty whities" because they were putting on the Rocky Horror Picture Show. When they finally showed him in his underwear he was wearing boxers (not even boxer briefs). Am a wrong or isn't the term 'tighty whities" supposed to just refer to white briefs? #firstworldproblems
You are not wrong. I think tighty whities has become an umbrella term to refer to underwear that is "gay" or otherwise lame or undesirable. Briefs are still in style, generally, but in the form of trunks or boxerbriefs. Style trends change.
ReplyDeleteHa! I watched that exact same episode of Glee for that exact reason and was pissed off about it too. I think people just don't care enough to know the correct terms, especially Glee who can't figure out a Show Choir is different than a Drama Group. On a similar note, I'm finding a lot of younger guys claiming to wear briefs when in reality they wear boxer briefs.

Exactly...I especially hate when they say briefs and its clearly a speedo. Tighty Whities should only be in reference to full cut tight white briefs, like FOTL, Hanes, etc...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with briefs vs. speedos thing. Some like that may occasionally creep in here, especially if clips from foreign movies, but to me, white briefs are the old school kind.
ReplyDeleteI was also upset about the Glee episode. I was expecting actual white briefs and got boring boxers instead. It is annoying when someone says tighty whities and it's anything but.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with what your saying! Its so annoying when guys use underwear terms interchangeably and incorrectly. Like when guys call "boxer briefs" "briefs", and so on. I get so annoyed. Its like people just don't know the correct terms or they are just being lazy or just don't want to call them their formal type. Especially "tighty whities", they have a very specific description and should only be called as such. I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices this nonsense, haha!
ReplyDeleteTo me when some one says "tighty whities" I honestly think of my favorite obsession white briefs. I think tighty whities means that it has to be white and tight. So if your wearing white boxer briefs I'll be disappointed but boxers.... That makes me outraged there long, baggy and, obviously not tight at all. If one says they're going to wear tighty whities and puts boxers on they deserve to be punished for lying and tricking us. Sorry "Glee" I could never get into that show as much as I like Jane Lynch. I would never really want to get married but if Jane proposed to me I would definitely consider her offer. To bad I'm too young and not a woman :( but as long as I can put makeup on and wear pretty dresses I'll manage to get by :)
