One of the best horror films of the 80's, it's hard to separate it out from the Elm Street films, but if you re-watch this one, you'll see a different, more menacing Freddie. As the sequels progressed Freddie became the king of the one-liners and pretty much quipped his way through the movies. Not so in the original flick (or the second one) where he remained a dark, foreboding dream monster. Haven't seen the re-make but doubt it could top the sequence with Jsu Garcia in his briefs. Jsu went on to do a (blink and you'll miss it) full frontal scene in the movie "Wildcats" with Goldie Hawn, which also had Woody Harrelson sporting some white briefs.
This scene does appear in the remake but the guy is in a shirt and boxers. The remake on the whole was lackluster. They had a good opportunity to make Freddy scary again and launch a new series of films but they dropped the ball horrendously.

That's a shame; both the boxers and the movie being lackluster. I'm not sure why i haven't watched it, I watch every other crummy horror flick. The re-make of Friday the 13th was horrible too ... I didn't expect much from it and it didnt even meet that standard. Probably the only decent horror re-make recently was "Texas Chainsaw." I didn't really need to see Michael Myers backstory in the Halloween re-make. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteThe Texas Chainsaw was a good remake. I also liked the Fright Night remake. But most of them are horrible. I agree that we didn't need Michael's white trash backstory. It was a lot scarier when he was just a young kid who decided to murder his sister and not some picked on mama's boy.

You are right about Fright Night .. good remake. We have some similar tastes in horror flicks. Did you ever see an older flick called "Night Warning?" It is a bit disturbing in subject matter but pretty well done for a no-budget flick during the slasher period. No underwear but the male lead (Jimmy McNichol - sp?) has a brief nude scene.
DeleteHaven't heard of Night Warning. I'll have to check it out. Have you watched the Night of the Demons movies? The first two are good but the third one is blah. In the second one a cute guy is in white boxerbriefs. They're not high art but they are fun late 80s/early 90s cheesy and campy.

Yeah, night of the demon flicks (esp. 1st one) are pretty good. If nothing else they came up with a unique place for lipstick. You can watch the night warning movie on youtube. It is typical 80's in most respects but the gay overtones and the truly creepy issues with the Aunt keep it watchable.
DeleteThey certainly did. I never would have guessed to put lipstick there. I watched the remake and while I liked it it was nowhere near as good as the original. But most things never are.

In the credits, this actor appears under the pseudonym Nick Corri. He changed his name at different stages of his career. Jsu Garcia is his real name. This film (and this scene in particular) are special for a European boomer, like me. I saw it on VHS, just after number 2 of Elm Street, so homoerotic. I did not have a particular taste for horror films. But when I understood that we saw the intimacy of young Americans, and that there was a sexual subtext I began to be interested in it.
In this first opus, this male character is the coolest, while the one played by Johnny Depp is more of a kid. I love seeing this young man, gorgeous, in his underwear, facing Freddy's crime. Later we see him again and we understand that he only put on his pants and leather jacket before fleeing.
Seen from Europe, it was both very sexy and very surprising: a cool guy in a leather jacket, wearing under his jeans, classic briefs supposedly uncool at all. (Even if that's what excited me the most.)
This was before the Internet and YouTube. You had to go to rent the VHS tape and have it for a day or two only. The image quality was poor and even worse when you played it in slow motion or freeze frame.
The younger generations can hardly imagine it. But I'm so happy to have access to these scenes in today's conditions.
