Before DVR and cable re-running things constantly, finding a scene like this was both exciting and disappointing. Exciting because, well I will let the pics speak for themselves, and disappointing because there was no way to capture it (at least for me) except in your memory. I was glad to finally find this scene again. Don't really care for the movie (brother and sister -by marriage, not blood- fall in love, much to the chagrin of their parents) but it was actually done fairly well, and not nearly as exploitative as the title and subject matter would lead you to believe. If the Brady Bunch would have covered this topic they might have gotten a 6th season.
Only in the 80's would this be a man's robe
You've summed up how I also felt as a child! Another great post.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the 70s and 80s and most of my friends just wore tighty whities to bed so I always wondered why tv shows and movies always depicted teenage boys sleeping in pajamas. I remember seeing this movie on tv in 1986 and thinking it odd but realistic that they had both boys wearing just briefs to bed.
ReplyDeleteI also never understood why everyone always wore pajamas on tv. People always hung around the house fully dressed including shoes and socks. The kids on the Brady Bunch never wore shorts even though they lived in Southern California. Even in the Hawaii episodes, all the guys wore pajamas. The boys in Flipper might have just worn shorts all day in every episode, but come bedtime they wore pajamas both bottoms and tops.
ReplyDeleteSo, I applaud the makers of this film for depicting the guys wearing underwear to bed. It is good to see people in underwear in a natural, realistic setting without it being intended for sexual or sensual purposes. Slums of Beverly Hills and the In Crowd are the only two other films I can think of that show brothers sleeping in underwear as an everyday, normal thing.
Major thanks to the owner of this blog for reminding us of scenes that show underwear as a regular part of everyday life and not just for sex or humiliation or violent reasons.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Another movie like you described is "Clownhouse" but I hesitate to post it because I'm not sure of the age of the actor. The one kid (who I definitely wouldn't post) is underage for sure and was molested by the director so it's hard for me to view the clip and not think of that. The other scene that comes to mind is the TV series "The outsiders" based on the book/movie. There were several scenes of the brothers hanging out in their briefs just having breakfast etc.
DeleteI watched Clownhouse when I was young and had a crush on the middle brother. He looked nice in his tight white briefs. I didn't find out until later about the director molesting the young star. I haven't watched it since even though I liked it and thought it was a creepy little movie even though I don't have a fear of clowns.
DeleteI can only think of three instances at the moment in other TV shows/movies where it was shown as normal for guys to sleep in their underwear. The movie C.R.A.Z.Y. has the main character sleeping in nothing but briefs or briefs and a shirt even though he shares his room with his younger brother. The oldest son in the show Grounded For Life(though he's still young) was eating cereal in the kitchen in just a shirt and white briefs. Though this backfires when a pretty classmate walks in and sees him in his underwear. The first season or two of Malcolm In The Middle showed all three boys lounging in their underwear/sleeping in their underwear a lot. Though if you want to see a legal age Frankie Muniz in tighty whities check out the first few minutes of Extreme Movie.

Love this scene. It is very wholesome. Looking back loved situations of being in just briefs when growing up. If that interests anyone else, feel free to shoot me an email. I'm on yahoo chat. Joel_d328 (AT) yahoo (DOT) com
