Boy was this movie a blown opportunity. Despite the fact that the movie was filmed in the 80's almost all the cast wore boxers. Even during the lengthy locker room scene and shots of the football guys running out of the whorehouse in their underwear, only two are seen (briefly) in tighty whities. This should have been a classic!

You're right: virtually no guys under the age of 40 wore boxers during the early 1980's (when this movie was made), certainly not in college. I know; I was there. Maybe it was different in Texas, but I very much doubt it. I'd guess the director of this movie was simply out of touch with reality. As you note, it was too bad because the reality was much, much better: a culture of white-briefs-wearing American guys.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this movie should have depicted guys and what they wore as underwear in the 80's. Although the movie was filmed in the 80's I'm not sure it was set in the 80's. The DVD has, as an extra, a theatrical trailer, which has another scene with a guy in his tighty whities. We all know, however, what made this movie a classic, is the jock strap scene. Curious that the director would have no problem showing these hottie boys in jock straps but not tighty whities.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree it made no sense that 90% of the guys were wearing boxers. The film had to be set in either the 1970s or 80s which was when 99% of guys that I saw wore briefs.
