For a series that is set in the 80's you'd fully expect the actors to be wearing white briefs .. because back in the day ..thats what everyone wore ! but ....in this scene .. the briefs do look like Amazon Essentials .. and those WOULD NOT have been availabe in the 80's ... should have been vintage hanes FOTL or JCPeney
What wardrobe department do you expect to find unworn 40 year old underwear for an actor to wear? And from a performer's perspective I would not be ok wearing 40 year old underwear.
I tried to buy a 3 pack of Hanes from 1979, the bid went up to $105 and like I was considering going up to $150 but I am not rich... and I was sleeping lol so I didn't buy them.
The briefs are obviously not brand appropriate for the time, but I imagine costume dept is really only looking to get ones that don't have writing on the waistband. JC Penney is so popular for period pieces because the waistband looks old-timey.
I have been searching forever for THIS SCENE from an old 80's movie I saw on tv probably back in the 1990's. I was watching an old episode of Miami Vice and saw the actor and remembered it was him in this scene. I did some digging and found the movie with this scene. It is a great scene with some good shots of the character getting out of bed in just his white briefs then chasing a vehicle down the street only in his briefs. WAOOHHH !! We MUST find this movie "Billy Galvin" and add caps to this blog ! Thank your for the find. I remember this actor (Lenny von Dohlen) in another movie, Eletric Dreams. Found him so sexy and was disappointed not seeing him in his undies. It was 35 years ago.
Some filmmakers go to the trouble of sourcing vintage clothing, but for a show like this, the best a costumer can do is source something that looks vaguely like what was worn in the period. At least they got the style correct.
The scene is great and the shows not bad so far. His dad is talking to him through this whole scene and there’s another guy showing gray sweatpants bulge and brieflines so should be plenty more to look at in future episodes

ReplyDeleteJust a heads up - the trailer for episode 2 on EPIX's site shows this character in tighty whities again so we'll definitely be seeing more. :)
