Interesting thing about this scene is that early in the movie the character is seen wearing boxers. When the Devil sets out to embarrass him though, by stripping him in front of his classmates, he is in briefs. Was he just wearing briefs that day or did the Devil know that the best way to embarrass him would be by switching the boxers to briefs as part of the humiliation? Never understood why anyone would be embarrassed being seen in boxers ... they are just like being in shorts.
I wish they showed more of him, he has a great body...such a short scene.

Interesting commentary about which is more embarrassing? Boxers or briefs. First: The scene is way too short. The writers and/or director could have easily made it much longer. For example: After finding himself in his tighty whities and initially running from his fellow classmates, he could have frantically sought refuge by attempting to find a place to hide, only to have him accidentally enter packed classrooms, a crowded lecture hall or varsity cheerleader practice. Or perhaps, while navigating a seemingly empty hallway corridor, he could have confidently turned a corner, only find himself face-to-face with his ~hot~ 23 year old, curvaceous Venezuelan math teacher, replete with big hair, high-IQ glasses, ruffled blouse, pencil skirt, 4-inch strappy high heels and fire-engine red pedicure, as she awkwardly giggles at the sight of him in his briefs. NOW, THAT WOULD BE HUMILIATING.
ReplyDeleteAs for the boxers or briefs for embarrassing impact: True, briefs when simply compared to boxers are generally considered to be more embarrassing. If he had been wearing boxers in the scene, given the circumstances, they might have looked like swimming trunks if given a passing glance. However, boxers, under the right circumstances, can be as embarrassing as briefs, in my humble opinion. A pair of full cut boxers (pale blue; a classic paisley pattern or white boxers with red hearts if you want to go slapstick) matched with a classic sleeveless white undershirt, black dress shoes, socks and sock garters, make it abundantly clear to all that the guy's is in his underwear. It's classic - and for many years (before briefs enjoyed broad appeal), that was the "wardrobe" in movies and on TV when a guy appeared in "underwear embarrassment" scenes.
Addressing the fact that he was seen in boxers earlier in the movie, I think the scene plays much better if you imagine that he himself put the briefs on that morning (as opposed to the devil switching his underwear).
ReplyDeleteHe probably is regularly a boxer guy, but his mom still buys him briefs which he finds tight and uncomfortable and doesn't wear. Then, this morning, he was out of clean boxers and all of his dirty pairs were in the wash, so he had to put on the tighty whities that he hates but that he still has in his drawer because his mom bought them. He puts them on and remembers why he hates them. They're tight and uncomfortable and he knows no one will ever let him live it down if they know he has them on. But there's no reason for anyone to know because he doesn't have to change in front of anyone that day. It's not a PE day.
He's going about his day and the tightness is really bothering him and he just wants to rip the briefs off. But he knows that it's only a few more hours until he'll be able to get home and get a clean pair of boxers to replace them with. And most importantly, no one has seen that he is wearing them. He goes into the hallway after class, he stops and then...WHAM! His clothes disappear and everyone sees him in the briefs. All of the sudden. the underwear he hates and finds uncomfortable and that he only wore once becomes a part of his identity. He'll be "tighty whitie boy" for the rest of high school.
